Ruth Roman, born in Lynn Massachusetts to Lithuanian-Jewish Mary Pauline Gold and Abraham Roman Abraham Roman, was the 3rd child of the family. Ruth was a small teenager when her father who was a carnival barker died. The mother of the family had to perform tasks like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth attended school, and grew up poor in Boston Massachusetts the tenement districts. She left school after two years, to go into acting. The path she chose to take turned out to be strewn with obstacles: In New York, she obtained a job posing for stills in a magazine for crime However, the stage was not a match for her. After that, she was an hat-checker at the nightclub before calling it quits and returning to Boston. There, she made the ends meet by working as an usherette during the day while in the evening, she performed in the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She graduated with a certificate in drama at Bishop-Lee Theatre School.
